Summer might seem like the perfect time to go on a date, but there are lots of romantic ideas that you can try out in the autumn season too. Here, Kirsty Prankerd from Write From The Heart gives you her favourite options for autumn date night ideas.

It’s easy to plan free dates during the summer, when you can make an occasion out of BBQs, trips to the beach, picnics in the park, and walking to see the sunset. But as the weather gets cooler, it can be more difficult to find free or cheap dates that feel as special, romantic, and entertaining as the summer ones for an autumn date night idea.

But you don’t have to settle for anything less than you did in the warmer weather, as there are plenty of options for enjoyable autumn dates that won’t cost a fortune. Maximise on the way that this season makes us feel cosy, and you’ll be well on your way to a romantic day or evening.

Go on an autumnal walk

The first thing we all associate with autumn is the beautiful orange, yellow, and brown colours of the leaves. Enjoying this with your partner, or someone you’re on a first date with, can be a relaxing and free way to see some romantic scenery.

Make sure to wrap up well, and you can even take a hot drink with you to warm you up more. A boozy hot chocolate with a shot of whisky or baileys works well, or you can go for a cup of spiced tea, or a coffee with a shot of cinnamon syrup. All these complement the colours of the season, and they will keep you toasty as you enjoy the autumn landscapes.

If you want to try something more active, you can also go for a cycle and take in the autumn leaves from your bikes. Paired with a drink in a local pub to warm up afterwards, this is a perfect way to spend time together as the weather cools down.

Get cosy in front of a fire

If you have a wood burning fireplace in your home, now is the perfect time to turn that into a date night. Just pile in the wood, and then snuggle up with some autumnal tea, hot toddy, or wine, depending on your preference. You can combine this with a movie or TV show, toast marshmallows, or just curl up together and have a chat.

If you don’t have a wood burning fireplace, you can make a campfire. Make a space in your garden and build a little campfire to gather round, and watch the autumnal sunset as you toast your marshmallows. This can be an ideal date night as the weather gets cooler, as you can spend some time outside but still stay warm! Make sure to add a few blankets and throws for maximum cosiness too, as this season can bring some chilly evenings.

Be a tourist in your own city

When you live somewhere, it’s easy to forget about all the tourist attractions that are in your city. So, why not try them out with your date? Go to the museums, art galleries, parks, and other attractions around where you live. Try looking up things to do online ahead of time, and you’ll probably find that you discover some attractions that you didn’t even know about.

This also gives you the opportunity to learn about each other as you take in the different destinations around your city. You’ll be able to share each other’s interests, and make some memories that will really last a lifetime.

Have a board games night

When it’s raining and windy outside, it’s the perfect time to cuddle up and play some board games. Classic games like Mouse Trap, Cluedo, Monopoly and Scrabble can all be played with two players, and will keep you and your partner entertained. Choose your favourite games that work with two people, and settle in for a fun (and free!) evening.

You can add some music, autumnal beverages such as herbal tea or beer, and snacks, to really complete the experience. You can also try creating a cosy atmosphere at home for the evening with candles and low lighting to really make it memorable. There’s no reason why a weeknight board game evening can’t be a romantic date full of memories!

Make a home cinema for your autumn date night idea

A home movie night is one of the best free date ideas, and it works whether you’ve been together for years, or just started seeing each other. Make your living room comfy, turn off the lights (or use low lighting) and then sit back and relax into a movie marathon. Cushions, foot rests, and blankets will make the movie night perfectly cosy, and snacks will complete it for that real home cinema experience.

You can watch a new film together or share your favourite movies with each other. Try having a night where you watch two movies, and pick one each. This way, you’ll learn lots about each other while you get cosy.

When the summer weather begins to fade and give way to rain and wind, it can feel like the potential for free dates is gone. But that doesn’t need to be the case. You can find plenty of free, cosy things to do with your partner or new crush, so pick your favourite autumn date night ideas and get started on your autumn romance.
