We chose to celebrate our wedding in Malibu, because we are both from Torrance in the South Bay, so we wanted a location that was close enough for our family, and you really can’t beat the views in Malibu.
The most important thing for us was to have a venue that felt private. We wanted the wedding to feel like an intimate dinner party. I saw Malibu Rocky Oaks in a magazine, and that was the first venue we looked that. We instantly fell in love with it. It was absolutely stunning, and the views were incredible, but it was small enough to where it still felt very intimate.
Once the venue was chosen, the invitations were the first thing we started working on. My sister and maid of honor, Lisa Aihara of Fiber and Dye designed all the stationery and signage for my wedding! She designed the most beautiful invitations; a detailed sketch of the Rocky Oaks with these really pretty botanical illustrations. She used all neutral colors with a splash of green, which we loved. So that really set the tone for the rest of the design of the wedding. It was perfect because Rocky Oaks is so stunning on its own that we wanted elements to compliment it, rather than take away from its beauty.
Our wedding planner Shannon Dexter designed and put together the most brilliant team to decorate the space. It was perfect. Our florist Carissa Jones of JL Designs hit it out of the park with the flowers. My favorite part was the semi-circle arrangement we had in lieu of a traditional arch. It was the perfect framing, for the picturesque views from the helipad, where we had our ceremony.
I got my dress at The White Dress bridal store in Corona Del Mar. I had a very specific ‘feel’ in mind, I knew I wanted something feminine, delicate but also classic; but I didn’t really know what style or cut I wanted. But when I tried on the Watters Mihr Dress, my mom, mother in law, sister, and bridesmaids all kind of knew it was the one.
The dress really determined my hair and makeup. Because of the beautiful detail on the top of the dress, I definitely wanted my hair up. My hair and makeup artist Tokiko Inoue, suggested this really soft braided updo, which I instantly fell in love with. As for makeup, I just told her I wanted to look like myself, just 100x better! My favorite part of the whole look though, was the earrings that Mitchell bought me. They were these beautiful diamond crawlers that matched the botanical detail on my dress. We designed them together before the wedding, which was a bit tricky to do without giving away anything about my dress, but we got it done!
The biggest tip we would give a couple is to pick your battles, not everything is a mmusthave And honestly, in the end, it’s a night where a bunch of people come and celebrate your love. There’s nothing better than that.
